Cast On - Bind Off

Instructor: Alissa Barton       Class Capacity: 25
Class Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Description ~ Cast On - Bind Off

There are literally hundreds of ways to start knitting, and yet it seems that we always fall back on the tried and true favorites.  Why is that?  Possibly because we do not have to stop and think about them, but more likely we never even give the start of our projects a second thought. But, we are knitters.  Smart knitters, with the world at our fingertips thanks to Google.  It’s time to expand our inner knitters and explore the world of cast ons.  Then, because when you cast on you must always bind off, I have combed the knitting world to come up with the best complimentary bind offs to the cast-ons we will learn.

Design your own Top-down Raglan Cardi

Instructor: Alissa Barton       Class Capacity: 25
Class Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

Description ~ Design your own Top-down Raglan Cardi

Raglan sweaters do not have traditional necklines or shoulder seams allowing for easy movement in the underarm area. These popular sweaters are flattering and comfortable to wear.

In this class there will be less knitting and more design discussion than in basic sweater classes. Students will start with yarn selection and gauge, discuss taking measurements, incorporating ease into your sweater, choosing stitch patterns, increases and edge treatments for cuffs, hems and button bands. Those who do not want to make a sweater for themselves are welcome to make an infant sized sweater instead. Pattern for an infant sized sweater is provided in class and used for purposes of discussion. Those wanting to make a sweater for themselves are encouraged to swatch before-hand and bring yarn to class to start. The duration of this cruise, with an entire week of scenic cruising in Antarctica, allows students plenty of time to progress on their projects between classes.

Students will start at the neck and create a custom designed pullover that fits. Choose between a crew neck sweater, V- neck sweater, or a square neckline. Learn how to figure yoke depth, body shaping, sleeve shaping and neckline finishes. This project is suitable for most yarns and knitting levels but if you plan on knitting this project during the cruise you might want to choose a lighter color you can see.

The Art of Keeping A Knitting Journal

Instructor: Alissa Barton       Class Capacity: 25
Class Level: All knitters

Description ~ The Art of Keeping A Knitting Journal

How many of us have projects languishing in the back of the closet because we have lost our way, forgotten or lost the pattern, the needles are gone or stitches dropped. Consider a knitting journal to be the Captain's Log - it can be as detailed or decorative as you wish, but the main purpose is to keep track of what you have done. A love note to your future self, if you will. Having detailed notes has saved many a knitter's bacon, but how do you know what to record? Alissa will provide a template sheet as well as show examples and hints on how to tailor your journal to your own needs. This workshop will prove to be indispensable to all of your future knitting projects and it will be entertaining so we encourage everyone to sign up.

Advanced Repair

Instructor: Alissa Barton       Class Capacity: 25
Class Level: Intermediate/advanced

Description ~ Advanced Repair

Basic repair is something most knitters can handle - dropped stitches, backing up, ripping back, etc. But what about when it isn't plain knitting? Picking up stitches in pattern can be quite the challenge, backing out when the stitches change places, or discovering where you are so you can pick up the pattern and go forward again are all much more advanced. We will start with basic texture, move on into cables, lace and end with brioche. You do not need to be an expert to attempt this, but this is one of the skills you will need to get to that expert level.
